SWITZERLAND

Don’t be so gloomy. After all it’s not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

I confess, there have been moments when I have shared the sentiments of Harry Lime (The Third Man). However then all I have to do is leave whichever Swiss town I happen to find myself in, for the countryside and all is forgotten. One word; beautiful.

Spectacularly zen. Green like nowhere else. Picture perfect. Almost unreal. There are few European landscapes I enjoy getting lost in than that of rural Switzerland. With the exception of Lucerne, Bern and possibly Lausanne, you can keep your Swiss towns – Basel, Geneva and Zurich do nothing for me, but escape to just outside their borders and it is a different story…

And out here it time becomes such a redundant concept it doesn’t even matter that it was in fact the Germans that invented the cuckoo clock.

Below are my tips for Switzerland. Enjoy
