TG Tips – Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania
Things to do in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
As well as places to stay, eat and visit…
It’s a bit of a shame to ‘lump’ these three countries together, but as I have ever only visited as part of the tour I lead that takes in their three capitals, for now, until I have more information about the countries beyond Tallin, Riga (my favourite) and Vilnius, this is what you get…
Tallin
The negative thing about this otherwise stunning city, is that it is now firmly on the Cruise Ship route. My goodness it can get busy. Thankfully, as usual with cruisers, anything beyond the set shore excursions and in ‘free’ time, leaving the comfort of the main square, seems beyond them, hence the amazing backstreets of Tallin, are usually still a little calmer.
Eat
Rataskaevu 16, name same as address. I ‘discovered’ this great place last year (2013) when it had only recently opened. I just returned (2014) find it has become – not surprisingly – the number one restaurant on trip advisor (with all that entails) in Tallin. So, now booking is essential.
It is not pricey nonetheless, simply good. Elk, Lamb, chef’s choice of fish… The decor is simple exposed brick, not too many tables and chairs that take me back to my Danish childhood. No website, so if you can’t visit to book email them on rataskaevu16@gmail.com or call +3726424025.
Cafe Koogel Moogel – Toom-Kooli tn 13
All tourists come up to the upper old part of town as part of their cruise ship shore excursions, but at a certain point they all turn right, so… turn left, down a tiny street towards the Canadian embassy where right next door, is this delightful little cafe AND theatre. The cafe’s interior is cosy and homelike, but also fun and exciting – after all, Koogel-Moogel is both a cafe and theatre and is often turned into an auditorium for performances.
Can’t find a website, but make the effort for the great cakes and coffees alone. Especially on a wet day – perfect.
