Things to do and see as well as places to stay in Bordeaux…<\/p>\n

Oh goodness one could spend a long time exploring both this wonderful town as well as the fascinating and stunning countryside that surrounds. Come in September time perhaps – harvest in the vineyards. It’s so interesting to feel the buzz – almost tangible in the air – as those little droplets of liquid gold receive their final rays and near perfection. Love it here…<\/p>\n

Places to Eat in Bordeaux<\/strong><\/p>\n

Baud et Millet<\/em> – 19 rue Huguerie. Open Monday to Saturday 10-23. Now this, if you’ll excuse the expression – or idea, is exactly the sort of place I’d wish to take someone on a first date. The concept is wonderful – you pay (it’s not cheap) a fixed amount and then gain unlimited access to the fabulous ‘cheese dungeon’ below.<\/p>\n

When I visited I think there were in excess of 100 cheeses in the cellar below – yes it is supposed to drip on you, by the way. Get sliced delicious hams to accompany and of course, of course superb wine. You can eat and learn so much about cheese – truly a wonderful idea and I heartily recommend it. Bar a Vin – 3, Cours du XXX Juillet<\/strong>. In fairness this place is pretty famous so most guidebooks I suppose mention it. So I thought I’d go along and see if in my humble opinion, the hullaballoo was merited – it is.<\/p>\n

In the words of the architect;
\n“The Bar \u00e0 Vin is made up of multiple spaces, each of which has its own atmosphere, with furnishings that offer the visitor a style and seating suited to the occasion<\/em>.” The wines were as one would expect, superb, the tasting plates fine, but mostly I was surprised at the prices – very very reasonable. Outside Bordeaux<\/strong><\/p>\n

L’Abricotier<\/em> – 2 Rue Bergoeing, 33490 Saint-Macaire. This restaurant (it’s also a small hotel I believe) turned out to be a wonderful culinary surprise on my way to St Emilion and ultimately Bordeaux. If coming from the South East, I can certainly recommend it. It is the favourite place of a bus driver I had on a tour recently and they usually know these things. We sat in the beautiful shady garden (possibly that was indeed an apricot tree which provided the shade?<\/p>\n

The food was delightful, I was especially impressed by the attention to detail in the presentation. As you’d expect great wine too. The location is perhaps not the most romantic, but I’d certainly be tempted to check the hotel as a base for exploring the wonderful, famed vineyards that commence from its doorstep.
