Things to do and see in Assisi…

There is something so peaceful about this wonderful hilltop town. I find it one of those places that transcend beliefs, but just makes one feel at ease and makes you reflect. I once took part in a peace march from Perugia to Assisi. It was just after the Twin Towers and was an incredibly moving, unifying experience. I admit also to finding the frescos by Giotto in the Basilica amongst the most beautiful paintings anywhere…

However all that thinking or meditating or praying – whatever is your thing, is bound to work up an appetite and when ready it is time to experience ‘porchetta’… Roast pork in sandwiches – a true Umbrian speciality. I am vegetarian, but confess to ‘cheating’ once a month or so. When I know a tour is taking me to Assisi, this is one place I do cheat.

This is a great little shop from which to buy all sorts of Umbrian specialities. BUT it is the newly, slow roasted entire pig in the window that always catches my attention. Your sandwich will be made in front of your eyes, you can select the pieces you’d like the maestro to slice off and add a little sauce.

Perfect, perfect for a cheap, good lunch. Then walk the 100 yards back up to the main square and sit on the temple steps watching the world go by… No real website to speak of.
